The Madlanga Commission chaired by justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga is on a break from public hearings and preparing its second interim report for president Cyril Ramaphosa which is due on Friday 29 May 2026. The allegations made by witnesses have flued investigations.
As of May 2026, several arrests have been made. A South African Police Service (SAPS) forensic science captain Laurance Makgotle was arrested in May 2026 following investigations linked to evidence presented before the commission, making him the latest person to be arrested. He is accused of defeating the ends of justice in several high-profile murder investigations.
In April 2026 a deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Julius Mkwanazi was arrested on charges including fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. Mkwanazi was arrested alongside City of Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla on charges of corruption and fraud. Lerutla has denied wrongdoing and expressed confidence that a full trial will clear his name.
Suspended Sergeant Fannie Nkosi was arrested after a police raided his home and allegedly found state ammunition, missing criminal dockets and multiple firearms. Some of the missing dockets are said to be linked to violent crimes and may have been hidden to protect criminal syndicates. Investigators also found money in the property and more is believed to be moved through his and these amounts do not correspond with his salary. Nkosi was denied bail and is challenging the court’s ruling.

Task Force Matiphandile Sotheni was arrested in March 2026 for the murder of whistle blower Marius Van der Merwe ‘witness D’ who testified about alleged torture, murder cover-ups, and criminal activity linked to EMPD figures. Sotheni maintains his innocence and claims wrongful arrest.
The commission has heard many allegations so far and those accused still maintain their innocence. With the rate of investigations more arrests can be expected.
